Why Cleaning Your Car Before the NCT Matters

The National Car Test (NCT), operated by Applus+ on behalf of the Road Safety Authority (RSA), is a mandatory roadworthiness inspection for all cars in Ireland that are four years old or older. The test covers over 60 individual inspection items across bodywork, chassis, suspension, brakes, lights, emissions, steering, wheels, and interior equipment.

While a dirty car will not automatically fail the NCT, it can cause problems. If the inspector cannot clearly see a component due to dirt, mud, or grease, they may mark it as "unable to inspect" which effectively counts as a fail item requiring a retest. A retest costs €28, plus the time and inconvenience of a second visit. A €15 to €50 car wash before the test is a smart investment that can save you money and hassle.

Beyond practical considerations, a clean car creates a positive impression. Inspectors see hundreds of cars every week, and a well-presented vehicle suggests an owner who takes maintenance seriously. While this does not affect the objective test results, it sets the right tone.

Pre-NCT Cleaning Checklist

Here is a comprehensive cleaning checklist to prepare your car for the NCT. Work through each area systematically the day before or morning of your test.

1. Exterior Bodywork

Give your car a thorough exterior wash. A hand car wash is ideal because the operator can pay attention to areas that automatic washes miss. Key areas to focus on:

  • All bodywork panels — Remove all dirt, mud, and road film so the inspector can check for rust, corrosion, and structural damage
  • Door shuts and sills — Clean the areas where doors meet the body, as these are checked for corrosion
  • Wheel arches — Remove mud and debris so suspension components and inner arches can be inspected
  • Fuel cap area — Clean around the fuel cap as this area is checked

2. Lights and Reflectors

The NCT checks all lights for operation, condition, colour, and alignment. Clean every light on your car:

  • Headlights (dipped and main beam) — clean the lenses thoroughly and check both bulbs work
  • Front indicators and side repeaters
  • Rear lights, brake lights, and reverse lights
  • Rear fog light
  • Number plate lights
  • Front and rear reflectors

Yellowed or cloudy headlight lenses can affect beam alignment testing. If your headlights are significantly discoloured, consider a headlight restoration polish before the NCT.

3. Registration Plates

Registration plates must be clearly legible. Wash both front and rear plates to remove dirt, and check that the characters are not faded, damaged, or obscured. The plates must display correctly formatted characters on the correct background colour (white front, white rear for standard Irish plates).

4. Windscreen and Windows

Clean all glass inside and out. The NCT tests windscreen wipers and washers, so ensure:

  • The windscreen is clean inside and out
  • The washer fluid reservoir is full — this is tested during the NCT
  • Wipers clear the screen effectively without smearing
  • There are no cracks or chips in the windscreen within the wiper sweep area (a chip larger than a 20 cent coin in the driver's critical vision area is a fail)
  • All side windows and rear window are clean
  • Remove any stickers, air fresheners, or objects hanging from the rear view mirror that could be classified as windscreen obstructions

5. Underbody and Wheel Arches

The underbody inspection is one of the most thorough parts of the NCT. The car is placed on a lift and the inspector examines the chassis, subframes, suspension mounting points, brake lines, exhaust system, and floor pans from underneath. A dirty or muddy underbody makes this inspection difficult.

A drive-through car wash with an underbody wash option is the quickest way to clean the underside. Alternatively, a self-service jet wash allows you to direct the pressure washer at the wheel arches and underbody yourself. Focus on the sill areas, suspension components, and around the exhaust.

6. Engine Bay

The inspector will open the bonnet to check fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid), battery condition, bonnet catch security, and for visible leaks. A clean engine bay makes it easier to spot and inspect these components. You do not need a detailed engine clean, but remove any heavy grease, debris, or leaf build-up. Wipe the tops of fluid reservoirs so levels can be read clearly.

7. Interior

The NCT inspection includes checks on the interior including seat belts, dashboard warning lights, horn, interior mirror, door locks, and window operation. Prepare your interior by:

  • Vacuuming the seats and carpets — a tidy interior is easier to inspect
  • Cleaning the dashboard so all warning lights are clearly visible at ignition
  • Ensuring all seat belts retract and fasten properly — clean any sticky or jammed belts with soapy water
  • Removing all loose items from the footwells, dashboard, and rear shelf
  • Checking that all doors open and close properly from inside and outside
  • Testing that all windows go up and down (electric or manual)

8. Boot

Empty the boot completely. The inspector needs to access the boot to check the spare wheel (if fitted), check the boot catch, and sometimes access rear light clusters from inside. Remove:

  • All shopping bags, tools, and personal items
  • Aftermarket boot liners that cover the spare wheel access
  • Heavy items that could shift during brake testing

Additional NCT Preparation Tips Beyond Cleaning

  • Check all lights work — Test every bulb including number plate lights. Replace any blown bulbs before the test. Spare bulbs are cheap insurance.
  • Top up fluids — Oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windscreen washer fluid should all be at the correct level.
  • Check tyre condition — Minimum 1.6mm tread depth across the full width of the tyre. No cuts, bulges, or uneven wear. All four tyres (and the spare) must be in good condition.
  • Test seat belts — All belts must fasten, retract, and lock under sudden force. Clean sticky belts with warm soapy water.
  • Check for warning lights — Start the engine and note any dashboard warning lights. ABS, airbag, and engine management lights that remain on will fail the NCT.
  • Bring your documents — You need your vehicle registration certificate (VRC) or log book on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pre-NCT Car Cleaning

Will a dirty car fail the NCT?

Not automatically, but if the inspector cannot properly examine bodywork, lights, plates, or underbody due to dirt, they may mark items as unable to inspect, which requires a retest costing €28. A €15 wash is cheaper than a retest.

What should I clean before the NCT?

Clean the exterior bodywork, all lights and reflectors, registration plates, windscreen and all glass, underbody and wheel arches, engine bay, interior dashboard, and empty the boot. See the full checklist above for details.

Should I get a full valet before the NCT?

A full valet is not required but recommended if your car has not been cleaned recently. A mini valet at €15 to €25 covers the essentials. A full valet at €40 to €80 ensures everything is spotless. See our price guide.

How much does a pre-NCT car wash cost?

A basic wash with underbody costs €10 to €15. A mini valet with interior costs €20 to €30. A comprehensive pre-NCT valet costs €40 to €80. A DIY self-service wash costs €4 to €8.

Do NCT inspectors check the engine bay?

Yes. They check fluid levels, battery condition, bonnet catch, and look for visible leaks. A clean engine bay makes these checks easier. Remove heavy grease and debris, and ensure fluid reservoir markings are visible.

What should I remove from my car before the NCT?

Remove all loose items from the boot, rear shelf, and interior. Remove air fresheners hanging from the mirror. Remove aftermarket boot liners covering spare wheel access. Remove heavy items that could shift during brake testing. The boot must be accessible for inspection.
